PlayStation 5's next major firmware update is set to include the long-awaited Discord integration, according to a reliable industry insider.
Reports of a Discord voice chat feature for the PlayStation 5 have been circulating for too long at this point, with plenty of evidence suggesting that it's set to be rolled out very soon. Back in May 2021 it was first announced that PlayStation and Discord were going to be teaming up, allowing friends to “communicate more easily while playing games together”.
"At PlayStation, we’re constantly looking for new ways to enable players around the world to connect with one another, form new friendships and communities, and share fun experiences and lasting memories," the company wrote in an announcement at the time.

"It’s in this spirit that we’re excited to announce a new partnership with Discord, the communication service popularized by gamers and used by more than 140 million people every month around the world.
"Together, our teams are already hard at work connecting Discord with your social and gaming experience on PlayStation 5. Empowering players to create communities and enjoy shared gaming experiences is at the heart of what we do, so we are beyond excited to start this journey with one of the world’s most popular communication services."
It seems the plan was originally to roll out the feature in 2022. Clearly, this did not happen. Last week dataminers found evidence suggesting that voice chat will be added to the console imminently. Now, industry insider Tom Henderson claims to have learned from anonymous sources that the feature is coming as part of the PS5's firmware update 7.00.
Writing for Insider Gaming, Henderson notes that the update is currently scheduled for March 8. Alongside the much longed-for Discord integration, it also sounds like we'll be able to start streaming our PS5 games via the cloud to save on storage space. However, it should be noticed this feature will be locked behind PlayStation Plus' Premium tier.
