Xbox Name-Change Quietly Confirmed As Part Of Rebrand

Different name, same game

Xbox has quietly confirmed a name change as part of a very subtle rebrand.

Changing the name of any brand is nothing new, especially in the world of video games. For example, my beloved SEGA series, Yakuza, is now known as Like a Dragon or on Xbox, Gears of War is now simply known as Gears.

News of Xbox undergoing a subtle rebrand should come as no surprise. However, this particular rebrand is far more nuanced than the likes of Like a Dragon and Gears, because most of us probably wouldn't have noticed if it weren't for the eagle-eyed few.

Tom Warren of The Verge noticed one such subtle rebrand on Twitter. He noticed that on the Steam store, Microsoft first-party titles are now starting to be referred to as “Xbox on PC” instead of “Xbox PC”.

This particular rebranding was seen on the newly released Grounded 2 as well as the upcoming expansion for Age of Mythology: Retold, Heavenly Spear.

“Good job, Microsoft, keep changing it, don't let people get too used to any naming,” said Konstapascal, replying to Tom Warren’s tweet.

“What I don't get is the whole Xbox on PC as an additional version. They might as well start using Microsoft Gaming at that point since it is just a PC version of a game not acquired through Steam,” suggested AndreBob006.

“Great, that means Microsoft knows PC is not Microsoft’s last platform. But the Xbox console is more important,” replied Meyerpark.

“Continuing with the theme of Microsoft making no sense when naming things,” exclaimed Vistrix.

“Namings and Microsoft… Next, it will be Xbox on Windows PC and then Xbox on Office 365 Copilot,” joked SrJPG.

Will this be the last time Microsoft decides to rebrand anything, especially when it concerns PC and Xbox? I very much doubt it, but as long as it doesn't hinder the quality of any of its games, it’s not the end of the world.
