Released just last year, Dragon Age: The Veilguard became one of the most divisive games of 2024 as, despite being the latest instalment in a beloved RPG series, it failed to live up to the excellence of previous entries.

As a result, the latest instalment in the BioWare series sits at a measly 3.9 user score over on Metacritic with players criticising its sidelined characters, lack of depth that made previous entries so great, and most importantly, its writing.

There is no denying that Dragon Age: The Veilguard was one of 2024’s biggest disappointments.

However, it seems as though the game may finally be getting a second chance courtesy of Xbox Game Pass.

Microsoft added Dragon Age: The Veilguard to its Xbox Game Pass library back in August and, since then, the BioWare title has managed to see an impressive 1,525.88% player increase.

There is no doubt that adding the divisive game to the Xbox Game Pass library has allowed players to check it out without having to pay its full price and even make up their own opinions about it.

It also just goes to show how much adding a game to the subscription service can boost its popularity and give players who may not have had the chance to play it at launch a second chance.

Veilguard is doing so well right now that is has found itself jumping to a #33 position in this week’s Xbox charts whereas it did not even enter onto the 400 most-played Xbox games previously.

Of course, its sudden surge in popularity may not mean that its reviews will be glowing anytime soon but it will definitely give the game a second chance to make a name for itself.

After all, our very own Emma Flint loved Dragon Age: The Veilguard as a veteran of the series.

In her review, she wrote: “Dragon Age: The Veilguard is exactly what we needed after Inquisition. From the moment I stepped onto Minrathous’ streets, it felt like coming home.

After such an agonising wait, the franchise I adore is back as strong as ever. It respects what’s gone before while also welcoming change and innovation.”
