As one of the most highly anticipated games of the past eight years, one 2025 release is currently taking the gaming sphere by storm and its Metacritic score shows that the wait was definitely worth it.
Yes, I am talking about Hollow Knight: Silksong, the highly anticipated sequel to 2017’s Hollow Knight and one of 2025’s frontrunners for Game of the Year.
Developed by Australian indie team Team Cherry, Hollow Knight: Silksong is the game of the moment with gamers all over the world getting stuck into the brand-new Metroidvania.
With some players praising its improvements on the prequel and others criticising its difficulty spikes, which have resulted in Team Cherry already implementing a patch, there is no denying that Silksong really is “the moment”.

If, for some reason, you are unfamiliar with Hollow Knight: Silksong, its description reads as follows:
“As the lethal hunter Hornet, adventure through a kingdom ruled by silk and song!
Captured and taken to this unfamiliar world, prepare to battle mighty foes and solve ancient mysteries as you ascend on a deadly pilgrimage to the kingdom’s peak.
Hollow Knight: Silksong is the epic sequel to Hollow Knight, the award winning action-adventure.

Journey to all-new lands, discover new powers, battle vast hordes of bugs and beasts and uncover secrets tied to your nature and your past.”
Better yet? Hollow Knight: Silksong is currently free to download and play for Xbox Game Pass members so you will not have to deal with that £16.74 price tag (even though that is an incredible price).
Added on as a day-one release, millions of players have made use of this Xbox Game Pass deal and with it allowing many to get access to the game quickly, it is no wonder that Silksong’s Metacritic score is reflecting this.
At the moment, Hollow Knight: Silksong currently sits at a 9.0 user rating on Metacritic alongside a 92 Metascore based on critic reviews.

That is one of the highest scores of the year and testament to how much work Team Cherry has put into the game over the past eight years.
It remains to be seen if Hollow Knight: Silksong will win Game of the Year but it will no doubt be walking away with at least some reviews this December.
In the meantime, check out for our spoiler-free review which will be coming soon to see what we thought about this 2025 hit.
