A new Xbox update has made playing certain titles challenges, and by challenging we mean nigh on impossible.

Xbox gamers may have recently been roasting PlayStation 5 for its price increase, but that smug feeling is about to quickly evaporate. Assuming it hasn’t already.

Towards the end of August, Microsoft put out a system update for Xbox which has thrown a spanner in the works for gamers.

The most devastating of these issues is that many players are finding it difficult to go online to play their favourite games.

Despite the intention to improve quality of life for its users, this latest update has had the opposite effect.

Here’s what the August update intended to address/implement:

  • Amazon Fire TV Support for Xbox Cloud Gaming now includes new devices.
  • Installation options for certain games are now available on Xbox consoles and the Xbox Windows app.
  • Xbox users can now watch Discord streams from their consoles.
  • Xbox Elite and Adaptive Controllers now have toggle-hold functionality.

When systems don’t work as planned, where do gamers go to air their grieves? Reddit, that’s where.

User Creative-Cry-901 took to the social platform to complain about not being able to play their game online.

This was in spite of them having Xbox Game Pass.

“Not letting me play online even with Game Pass,” they shared.

Bittersweet comfort came when other users confirmed that this is a problem sweeping across Xbox, affecting numerous different individuals.

“This happening to a lot of people right now,” responded MOJOzRISING, “It's something to do with the system update and reseting your console. I reset my console last night and sftwr that I can't play online games. Everything else works fine. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.”

Unfortunately, most people are resetting their consoles before seeing these comments, and thus they find themselves in a similar boat as the OP.

Naturally, this situation is causing a lot of “stress and worry” for users.

Although there’s no sign of an official fix for this problem yet, the Xbox community has found that playing via a wired connection bypasses the issue.
