Xbox Game Pass Adds Surprise Day One Freebie, Big The Last of Us Vibes

Xbox Game Pass has added a surprise free day one release, and it’s one for Papers, Please and The Last of Us fans.

When it comes to post-apocalyptic video games of the zombie variety, that’s my cup of tea. Franchises such as Resident Evil, Dead Rising, The Walking Dead and The Last of Us, I can spend countless hours immersed in their worlds.

That being said, sometimes the post-apocalyptic formula can get a little oversaturated and much like many other genres, originality can have somewhat of a backseat.

In fairness, just about everything is inspired by something, and nothing is truly original. In that respect, originality can come from a concept that has been an inspiration and evolved into a new spin, kind of like the game that is featured in this article.

However, one game that may offer a bit of originality is Quarantine Zone: The Last Check, developed by Brigada Games and published by Devolver Digital.

“Command the checkpoint in a collapsing city. Screen survivors, manage scarce resources, and hold back the undead. Every choice matters, and one mistake could unleash the plague beyond your walls,” reads the synopsis of Quarantine Zone: The Last Check on Steam.

Quarantine Zone: The Last Check looks inspired by Papers, Please!

The trailer for Quarantine Zone: The Last Check gives me the impression that you play a role similar to a FEDRA (Federal Disaster Response Agency) agent in The Last of Us.

But instead of a cordyceps fungal outbreak, it has something like the T-Virus from Resident Evil 2.

In terms of gameplay, despite being in a 3D world and not pixelated 2D sprites, Quarantine Zone: The Last Check reminds me of Papers, Please.

Quarantine Zone: The Last Check tasks you with deciding the fate of people, whether or not they get to cross the border of safety.

I would imagine that this game will also have a lot of moral conflict.

There are a number of ways to determine whether a person might be infected, such as taking samples, scanning eyes, checking reflexes with a hammer, and more.

Quarantine Zone: The Last Check’s release date is today on both Steam and the Microsoft Store. However, as great as it is being a day one launch on Xbox Game Pass, the only snag is, it’s available on PC Game Pass, and not the console version of the subscription service.

At the time of writing, no information confirms a release date for Quarantine Zone: The Last Check on PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo. Hopefully, if this game proves to be a success on PC, it might get a console launch one day. We’ll have our fingers crossed.
