Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 brings back the series' iconic multiplayer, with 13 core maps available following Shipment's addition on October 27, ahead of Season One on November 6. But which maps are worth your time? We're ranking every MW4 multiplayer map from worst to best.
Multiplayer has been a major part of Call of Duty since the original game launched on PC in 2003, becoming a genre staple that many games have tried to replicate. A good Call of Duty map needs a solid flow of action, fair spawn points, room for different playstyles and a distinct identity.
Of course, ranking the best Modern Warfare 4 maps is subjective, and your favourite could be someone else's worst. Shipment, for example, is a divisive map that some players love and others can't stand. With that in mind, let's get into the ranking.
The 13 best Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 maps ranked
13. Lotus

Set in a ruined South Korean fishing village, Lotus has the feel of a once-tight-knit community torn apart by war, with an abandoned market, boathouse, gardens and residential blocks. Its varied locations offer plenty of opportunities for different playstyles, but the layout can take some getting used to, which may frustrate players who prefer more straightforward maps.
12. Transit 213

Advert
Set in an overgrown parking lot in western India, Transit 213 features abandoned buses that provide cover for campers, high-rise buildings that suit snipers and construction sites for run-and-gunners. These different areas encourage fast-paced action, but unpredictable engagements and frustrating spawns can make this one a map players would rather skip in the rotation.
11. Munition

Located inside a North Korean military command facility, Munition features large hangars, an ammunition depot, monitoring rooms and a connecting skybridge. Its open areas and sightlines can favour snipers, which might be an instant turn-off for players who prefer close-range combat.

10. Reactor U92

Set inside a damaged South Korean nuclear facility, Reactor U92 features a huge central containment area surrounded by industrial spaces. Its varied layout can be a good thing, but the different sightlines and approaches can make it difficult to predict enemy movements, especially when switching between weapons suited to different engagements.
9. Mumbai

Perhaps one of the most distinctive multiplayer maps in Modern Warfare 4, Mumbai is set in a densely populated district of the Indian city, featuring a Victorian-style market, residential buildings, narrow streets and a railway line. It's wonderfully colourful, and its varied routes and verticality create plenty of opportunities to flank enemies, although its busy layout can make it difficult to predict where your next gunfight will come from.
8. Silkworm

Set in a once-vibrant South Korean shopping district, Silkworm features surrounding apartment blocks, narrow alleyways and a central subway entrance. It has urban vibes similar to Mumbai, with plenty of opportunities for close-range combat and clever flanking routes, making it a great choice for fans of SMGs and shotguns.
7. Nautical

Set on a South Korean ferry, Nautical gives off major Black Ops II Hijacked vibes. The open decks are great for longer-range fights, while the narrow corridors make close-quarters combat frantic. It's one of the most fun maps in MW4 if you enjoy fast-paced action.
6. Coal

Set among the remains of an old Soviet coal-processing plant in a remote, mountainous area, Coal features industrial buildings, ore chutes and a polluted flood plain. Its interconnected structures can encourage tactical play, particularly in objective-based modes, although the layout may disrupt the flow of a match and make it harder to anticipate enemy movements.

5. Cachette

Located on the outskirts of a French rail terminal, Cachette features an abandoned wine warehouse and a derelict mechanic's garage converted into a covert armoury. Its balance of indoor and outdoor combat offers opportunities for different playstyles, while its relatively straightforward layout makes it an accessible choice for players who prefer to get straight into the action.
4. Rooftops

As the name suggests, Rooftops takes place across the snow-covered rooftops of New York's Hotel Times West. Its greenhouse, boiler room, patios and other interconnected areas create opportunities for vertical combat and tactical repositioning, although you'll need to keep moving to avoid being flanked by opponents holding advantageous positions.
3. Sentry

Set at a Russian military base during a snowstorm, Sentry centres around a command centre surrounded by barracks, a maintenance garage and a substation. The central position offers opportunities for organised teams to hold their ground, while the surrounding buildings give attackers different routes to challenge them. However, the whiteout conditions can make spotting enemies more difficult.
2. Shipment

One of the most divisive maps in Call of Duty history, Shipment made its debut in 2007's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Created as a testing map during development, it has since become a franchise icon, returning in several games, most recently MW4. Set in a Russian harbour, Shipment is the definition of CoD chaos, with a good chance of either racking up kills or repeatedly getting taken out. Its unpredictable action is all part of the fun, provided you can handle the frantic pace.
1. Lithium

For a brand-new map introduced in MW4, Lithium has plenty going for it. Set inside a lithium-processing refinery in rural Mexico beneath the Sierra Mountains, its arena-like layout encourages fast-paced firefights and offers plenty of opportunities to flank the enemy. It has shades of classic Quake, and while its frantic pace might not suit players who prefer a more methodical approach, those who enjoy a bit of organised chaos should have a blast.
