Fable was shown off during last night’s Xbox Developer Direct and while we’d already seen gameplay prior to the broadcast this was our most in-depth look yet.
The game is confirmed to drop later this year for Xbox, PC and PlayStation 5 consoles, but word on the street is that another console is being considered too.
Jez Corden reckons the Nintendo Switch 2 is also being considered for the next Fable game, and while it isn’t “100% definite for now” it is apparently “under consideration for the future.”
Xbox And Multiplatform Gaming
Now this isn’t anything new for Xbox as over the past few years the company has made it increasingly clear that it wants more of its games made available on other platforms.
If you told me back during the Xbox One days that one day a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved would be coming to PlayStation 5 I’d have called you crazy, but that’s happening later this year too.
Advert
The Nintendo Switch/Nintendo Switch 2 is seemingly a bit more challenging though it seems, but we are seeing more and more games from both Xbox and PlayStation arrive on its systems.
Fable wouldn’t even be a bad fit for the console either. It would join Nintendo Switch versions of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, so what’s another fantasy RPG added to the pile?

What This Means For Xbox’s Future

I’m all for cross-platform gaming but this does leave me wondering what Xbox’s endgame is in all of this.
The increasing number of Xbox game ports to other consoles would make more sense if the company plans to ditch hardware altogether. A bit like how SEGA exited the console wars and focused primarily on software years ago.
That’s clearly not the case though as Xbox is still working on its next-gen console, and the latest rumours suggest it’ll be tapping into the PC market with beastly hardware and a matching price tag.
It just leaves me bewildered though. If I can play most of the games Xbox and its studios produce on other platforms, what will be left to persuade me to buy its next console? Even Valve’s Steam Deck is starting to sound like a better deal despite being less powerful.
Fable should definitely come to the Nintendo Switch 2 if the hardware allows it, but I’m starting to think Xbox is becoming too flippant with what platforms it ships its games onto.
