Fable Gets Extended Gameplay Look, First Ever Open World and Launch Window Revealed

At Xbox’s January 2026 Developer Direct, we got our first look at Fable’s first ever true open-world. I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but it looks like it’s been worth the long, long wait.

Playground Game's Fable was first announced in 2020, before getting delayed in 2025.

Made for Fable fans, just like the brand new team behind the game, this immersive, beautiful and ambitious world looks to take the series to new heights, never seen before.

You might know Playground Games for Forza Horizon, but they're dedicated to bringing us a fresh perspective on this legendary franchise.

If you’ve never played a Fable game, where have you been? It’s okay, I was new to the series once too. It’s one of the most fundamental RPGs in gaming history, known for its comedy and morality system.

In typical Fable fashion, you start as a wee baby - a child - roaming around Albion carefree, before you discover you’re the first hero of Albion in a generation. It looks like you’ll be able to explore this massive open world from the get go, which I couldn't be more excited about.

The Xbox Developer Direct confirmed that you'll be able to take full customisable control of your character, including gender, hair, eye colour and more. We also got an in-depth look at its combat mechanics, and the morality system 'not being black and white'. Chicken chasers, rejoice!

We also got a look at everything you might expect to find in a Fable game, including multiple marriages, children and buying houses. Good job it's not the 2026 economy, you really can live a different life in video games.

Fable will be coming to Xbox Series X/S, PC (including Steam) and yes, PlayStation. It's also a day one in subscription service on Game Pass. More surprisingly, it's also available to buy on PlayStation day one as well. Didn't see that one coming!

If recent leaks are to be believed, this could be the largest Fable game yet, with a map that looks packed with new enemies (looking at you, fire-breathing chicken) and places to explore.

After the Developer Direct, Xbox confirmed with an interview with Fable’s GM and Game Director, Ralph Fulton that this is a full reboot of the entire series. He says:

"We’ve always referred to this game as a ‘new beginning’, because one of the things we were convinced of was that we had to reboot the franchise. It’s been a long time since the end of that original trilogy – nearly two generations have passed in video game terms."

Ralph continues - "There’s a lot of faithfulness in the way we’ve approached this game – and certainly I think the inspiration of the original trilogy is really clear for everyone to see – but we wanted to make sure that this was a new beginning that would allow us to tell the stories that we wanted to tell."

When Does Fable Release?

Fable will release in Fall 2026. Surely they're not brave enough to go up against the behemoth November release date of Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto 6?

Well, if any game could do it, it's Fable.
