Steam users can now pick up a free demo for a gorgeous upcoming tactics game, which has a 92% positive rating on the store page.
For those who’ve enjoyed turn-based tactics games like Into The Breach, Fights In Tight Spaces, or XCOM: Enemy Unknown, this latest Steam freebie might be worth your while.
The Vow: Vampire’s Curse is one of these kinds of games, described as a “dark fantasy roguelike deckbuilder fused with turn-based tactics,” where you rise each night to face a curse.
Combat takes place on a grid, where you must take it in turns to move your unit around the grid to attack or evade enemies. At the end of the turn, the enemy makes its move, and so on.

As you play, you build up a deck of cards which determine what actions you can use on any given night, allowing you to fortify defenses and adopt new strategies with every new battle.
Artistically, the game features a hand-drawn comic book aesthetic, with inked linework and high contrast colours depicting the dark fantasy setting.
While the full game isn’t due out until later in the year, the demo gives you a good chance of clearing some early levels and gaining an understanding of how it plays.
It’s not a huge chunk of the game, but it should give you a chance to see if you like the game or not ahead of its release later in the year.

And there’s a good chance that you may end up enjoying the demo, as it currently has a positive review rating of 92%, indicating that just over nine out of ten people have enjoyed it and would recommend it.
“It's pretty polished, and the graphics and general UX have a lot going for them, though the unique card mechanic did feel a bit janky as it doesn't seem to do much else other than restrict the player,” reads one positive review by a player with two hours logged in the demo.
Another positive review (this time with over 5 hours logged) reads “very good base, the game looks pretty, and the card mechanic is pretty unique. The demo however is brutal, but do try it out if you like isometric turn based combat with a card drawing mechanic.”
A third review says that “This has the bones of a very interesting game. It has a lot of similarities to Into the Breach in terms of combat and strategy. I like the card driven movement and combat and the mechanics of chaining cards by color adds another layer of strategic depth. The art style is unique.”
There isn’t a set release date for The Vow: Vampire’s Curse yet, but I’m sure that the positive reception to the demo will lead developer Mimyr Games to announce something in the near future.
