Steam's Newest Free Download Is Blowing Up Right Now

It has "Machina" in the title so it must be good

Anthem might have eventually proved to be a notorious failure, but it had enough to prove that mech-focused games really could be special. Sadly, the servers for that game are set to be shut down in January 2026 and so we'll have to look elsewhere for our robo-goodness, but fortunately there's a new game ready to fill the void.

Over on Steam, Daemon X Machina: Titanic Sion is set for a full release on 5 September, but the demo has just dropped and it has absolutely blown up.

According to SteamDB, the game topped out at 3623 concurrent players (which is huge for a demo) on 20 August, with the number holding steady at around 3000 at the time of writing.

The game is a direct sequel to 2019's Daemon X Machina, which received a relatively weak response from critics but proved to be a commercial success amongst players.

Titanic Sion has a fully original story to explore, something you can either do solo or with friends, and huge scale boss battles that you'll only see in games like Monster Hunter. The game also includes a fully customisable arsenal of mech suits and weapons that allow for a lot of different playstyles to flourish.

Lastly, there are a bunch of different ways to traverse the world, including mech flight, walking and riding on horseback, with the game also giving you the freedom to play at your own place.

Though the lack of a dedicated PvP might be off-putting for some, there is more than enough here for someone with even the vaguest interest in the genre to give it a go. The visuals are excellent also, and a noticeable upgrade on the first game.

Developer Marvelous Inc. might have received a mixed response to the first release in the series, but it looks like they've gone all in to ensure this one is a success.
