Steam's latest free game is a 'blast', fans agree

Is that a ... chao?

I’m sorry to do this to you because I’m imagining that your backlog is already buckling under the weight of all of the games you keep adding to it, but I’m going to potentially throw one more on the heap.

You see, Steam is home to a new free game that just so happens to have already proven to be a hit with players.

There’s simply no reason not to try it, besides that aforementioned backlog and perhaps a shortage of time … but let’s shove those factors aside.

My Slime Garden launched in early access earlier this month.

Developed by Slimebox Games, it’s essentially part creature collector, part roguelike.

You’ll “raise, nurture, and breed adorable slimes in a relaxing adventure where each slime is unique”, teases the synopsis.

“Mix traits to create new slime companions and explore endless islands filled with secrets and surprises. Your perfect slime squad is waiting - how far can they go?”

ICYMI: God of War Ragnarök has landed on PlayStation Plus’ extra.

As the synopsis explains, you’ll go about breeding various slime companions, housing them all in a rather charming garden, but it’s when you leave this island that things grow interesting.

And yes, for some reason, some of the slime do look a lot like Sonic the Hedgehog’s Chao.

Once you leave the safety of your garden, you’ll be thrust into an “ever-evolving island survival adventure” where you’ll face procedurally-generated waves of enemies, garnering rewards for your slime.

You better make sure they’re up for the task first though.

Each journey is unique so My Slime Garden makes for endless hours of entertainment, and it’s totally free.

It’s already garnered a positive review score of 92% from players.

“Roguelike slime petting simulator. Worth playing for the music alone. No regrets,” wrote one Steam user.

“This game combines roguelike gameplay and Chao Garden customisation and stat upgrades. And it's honestly such a blast when fighting against the enemies,” added another.

At the low cost of nothing, it’s worth giving a go.
