In all fairness to Steam, it isn't shy of a special sale event. From the summer bonanza to the run-up to Christmas, there's usually some kind of impressive discount available around a particular type of game, developer or theme.
Today is no exception, with Steam 4X Fest currently available for the strategy minded amongst you. The sale features a ton of the biggest hitters in the genre, from all-time great Sid Meier releases to smaller projects from indie developers and even solo individuals.
Of all of those games on sale, there are 24 on the homepage alone that have quality demos so that you can try before you buy. With how different 4X games can be from one another, this is a huge bonus that should help you avoid games that simply don't gel with your approach or playstyle.
Probably still the biggest and the best option in this sale is Civilization V, which is sitting at 75% off for the full game, with a more than decent demo to show you the ropes. It's probably still the most complete game in the series, even if it will never be as good as Civilization II, according to me.

If you fancy taking that same formula and heading out into the cosmos, Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth does much the same thing as the mainline series, with a futuristic sci-fi twist.
If you have ever played any spectacular grand strategies like Crusader Kings or Europa Universalis, Imperiums: Greek Wars toes the line nicely between those games and a traditional, smaller scale 4X. The demo is also one of the broader offerings available for free, so it's well worth getting that first if you aren't sure.
With plenty of other options on the sale page, there should be something for even the most vaguely interested strategy player, so happy scheming!
