Steam users need to try out this free game, especially if they’re a fan of the Halo series.
With Halo being one of my favourite video game franchises of all-time the last decade has been pretty rough when I look back.
Halo 4, Halo 5: Guardians and Halo: Infinite all lacked that certain something to make them truly special and the TV adaptation was absolutely dire, though it did improve slightly in the second season.
Fortunately Helldivers II recently came along with an ODST collaboration, to mark the game’s launch on Xbox. In my mind that officially makes Helldivers II the best Halo game released in the last decade.

Over on Steam though there’s a free game available that honestly feels like a spiritual successor to Halo, specifically Bungie’s Halo, and it’s called CrossPlanet.
Take one look at the gameplay and hopefully you’ll see what I mean when I say it’s a spiritual successor, as it harkens back to the good old days of online shooters where it felt like an arcade experience rather than an eSport.
The game’s description even says as much, reading “CrossPlanet is a free, fast-paced, third-person multiplayer shooter with tight, skill-based combat … No fluff, no microtransactions, just pure action!”
It looks like good fun, and while it’s a little rough around the edges it’s only been developed by two people so the build quality is pretty good all things considered.

As soon as I laid eyes on it, it felt like I’d been transported back to 2007 when I actually enjoyed multiplayer shooters, and CrossPlanet specifically gives me Halo 3 vibes in both its appearance and its gameplay.
Hopefully the next Halo game is made with fun in mind first rather than a bloated cosmetics shop and battle passes…
