Steam drops 'hundreds' of free downloads you won't want to miss

Better make sure you board this hype train before 3 March

It’s everybody’s favourite time of the year (provided you aren’t a console player), because Steam is back with their quadrennial (always wanted an opportunity to say that) free video game bonanza event.

That’s right folks, it’s Steam Next Fest time. If you’re unfamiliar with the event, basically Valve teams up with a bunch of indie developers so that they can showcase their free demos to the world - and there are, no exaggeration, hundreds of new titles up for grabs.

There are so many in fact that I, nor any gaming journalists, actually have the time to root through and play all of these, but I can give you a few suggestions.

First up, we've got Tales of Seikyu - a little Legend of Zelda-inspired, Studio Ghibli-esque adventure that sees you harnessing "your powers of transformation" so that you can build a massive farm.

I think it looks dead cute, so that's earned it a recommendation from me based on that alone.

You can take a look at it in action below.

Secondly, there's Scaling Up. This one sees you take on the role of a dragon who also owns a ranch (don't ask questions I don't have the answers to) which you use to raise snakes.

Basically it looks like Stardew Valley had a crossover with an off-brand Pokémon clone - what more could you ask for?

And finally, there’s Wheel World. I’m personally extremely excited to play this one (and actually have it downloading in the background as I write this) because it’s made by the same developers that made Nidhogg.

It’s an open-world cycling game with a lot of customisation options and a cute little art style. Trust me on this one when I say I reckon it could be a banger.

Beyond these recommendations though, I suggest you just dive in there and have a proper good look-see. I’ve managed to browse through about a third of the list for myself so far and I’ve already found about 15 games that looked worth trying.

I dread to think how many I’ll have by the time I’m actually finished.
