Former Grand Theft Auto developer Obbe Vermeij has released an open-world sandbox game into Steam Early Access, and it even has a free demo.
Plentiful is a game described as a “nature sandbox” where you “shape the land and everything responds—water, plants, animals, and your people.”
It’s essentially a bit like if you took Minecraft, but gave it more of a simulated environment, with the world reacting to your actions in realistic and authentic ways.
When you move blocks, you shape the terrain, and in turn can redirect rivers, create lakes, and build fertile land.

Meanwhile, water flows dynamically through the world, and your changes will affect where and how life grows.
There’s a big focus on keeping each playthrough unique, where new events and choices you make can dramatically alter the course of your tribe’s future.
As Plentiful is billed as a “god game” (we really don’t get enough of those these days), you’ll be able to change how food is grown, how wildlife is supported, and how well looked after the tribe is as you manage resources, natural disasters, and the changing of time itself.

If you were a fan of games like Populous or Black & White back in the day, you might find Plentiful to be up your alley.
In case you fancied checking it out for yourself, Plentiful has a free demo available to you which will allow you to sample some of the early content on offer.
As it’s an early access game, expect some big changes to come further down the line too, with Vermeij expecting the game to remain in the beta stage for around six months.
Plentiful is available now on Steam at a retail price of £9.09. A 20% off launch discount is also applied until 19 May, where you can pick it up for £7.27.
The game currently has 15 reviews on the platform, which are all rated positive, indicating a 100% positive score.
Vermeij worked at Rockstar Games between 1995 and 2009 as technical director, working on GTA III and every GTA release since then up to GTA: Chinatown Wars.
After leaving Rockstar in 2009, Vermeij went independent and opened three studios: GabberGames, Rambl, and Learnia. Plentiful is being published by the latter company, and is the publisher’s first release on Steam.
Plentiful isn’t the only game from a former Rockstar Games developer which has seen recent attention, though.
Grove Street Games, the developer that was behind those rather atrocious Definitive Edition remasters from a few years ago, also recently revealed its upcoming kaiju open-world game, BeastLink.
It’s a multiplayer game set in a large city where players will play as helpless citizens trying to escape from a destructive kaiju battle, while other players will get to control the giant monsters themselves.
