GTA 6 publisher drops free PS5 upgrade for open-world remake, but PS Plus users can't claim it

While the Grand Theft Auto series is the biggest series in Take-Two Interactive’s IP collection, there are many more franchises under its control.

One such series that it oversees is Mafia, and while Mafia: The Old Country didn’t get gamers as excited as Grand Theft Auto VI, it still has its fans.

Mafia: Definitive Edition is a different story, though. It’s a beloved remake, and rumour has it that it'll one day be joined by a Mafia 2 remake as well.

Now it’s finally made its way to PlayStation 5 consoles, with all the bells and whistles you’d expect from a new-gen console port.

There’s a catch, however: the free upgrade isn’t available for everyone, which will surely leave many PlayStation 5 owners thoroughly disappointed.

How to claim Mafia: Definitive Edition’s PlayStation 5 upgrade

Those who bought the game digitally or own a physical copy for the PlayStation 4 should have no issue claiming their free upgrade.

As long as a purchase is tied to your account, you can redeem a free digital copy of the PlayStation 5 version. We’re sure PlayStation gamers are sick of that word by now: ‘digital’. We can’t blame them after the latest Sony hijinks.

Unfortunately, those who play the game via PlayStation Plus are ineligible for this free upgrade. Reddit user ZXXII shared a Discord message from a 2K staff member confirming the news.

That’s not uncommon, but it’s still a massive let-down. You might not technically own the game due to renting it via a subscription service, but you’re still paying a lot of money for what’s now considered a lesser version.

At the time of writing, it’s unknown if PlayStation plans to update its PlayStation Plus offering with the new-gen version of Mafia: Definitive Edition. It probably will, but we have no way of knowing when that’ll be.

In the meantime, you can probably just get yourself a second-hand copy of Mafia: Definitive Edition for the PlayStation 4. When you put the disc into your console, it should be upgraded to the PlayStation 5 version.

What’s included in the Mafia: The Omertà Collection?

Alongside a PlayStation 5 upgrade for the first Mafia game came a new collection titled Mafia: The Omertà Collection, featuring all previously released games in the series.

The original trilogy is featured in the collection, including Mafia: Definitive Edition, Mafia II: Definitive Edition, and Mafia III: Definitive Edition.

Also included is Mafia: The Old Country Definitive Edition, which is said to replace the previously released Mafia: The Old Country Deluxe Edition.

If you already own some of these games, but not others, you’ll be entitled to a discount equivalent to whichever ones you’re missing. It goes on sale later today, August 14.

So, a pretty mixed bag of news altogether. The new collection is rather exciting and a great way to get into this legendary series if you haven’t already, but PlayStation Plus continues to kick subscribers in the teeth with its lack of new-gen upgrades, or rather, its delay of upgrades.
