It's not looking good for the Blue Team, as Sony is still reeling from the fallout of deciding to stop creating physical games. The gaming giant was raked over the coals when it confirmed it will move out of the physical market in 2028, meaning any game you buy will come from a digital code.
The writing was already on the wall, with Sony's first-half sales of 2026 said to be dominated by 85% digital sales although that is supposedly skewed by thousands of games that only launched digitally. While video game purists and physical media collectors alike can bang their drum, the sad fact is that the majority of customers have already embraced the digital market. That's all well and good for convenience, but without knowing it, you could be about to lose your favourite PlayStation games.

Even though it's hard to imagine letting our accounts go idle in a year that still boasts Marvel's Wolverine and GTA VI, already irate gamers have spotted a clause suggesting Sony can terminate your account if you let it sit for too long.

Over on the r/StopKillingGames subreddit, concerned fans noted that Sony's terms and conditions state inactive PlayStation Network accounts can be closed after 36 months.
In theory, this means anything you've bought over the years would be completely wiped.
Even though not using your account in three years might seem like a pretty lengthy absence, there are a multitude of reasons why this might happen.
There seems to be some miscommunication here, with many in other corners of the internet suggesting the terms and conditions have been updated in response to the backlash, but we'd like to reiterate that this doesn't seem to be the case.
Lamenting the clause, the OP wrote: "Please note it's not new like this month new but I think it's a somewhat recent change. Hearing this means your games may be inaccessible when it happens." They also stated that this appears to be due to European Union laws, meaning it's not totally fair to put the blame at Sony's door

As pointed out by ComicBook, things were updated in April 2026, with Sony supposedly contacting anyone when they have six months left on the clock. You'll apparently be told to sign in or make a request to keep your account open. Then again, with digital purchases apparently becoming inaccessible and the decision being irreversible, you can imagine the furore it's caused at a time Sony could do without it.
There also seems to be confusion about whether you actually would lose your games, with someone in the thread claiming they've not logged in since 2022's Horizon Forbidden West. Another asked them to sign in and check whether their purchased games are still there, with the absentee gamer maintaining they still are.
Still, if complaints about potentially losing your precious trophies weren't enough, there's been an obvious uproar.
Responding to the thread, one person pointed out the obvious as they wrote: "F**k people who got into accidents or have illnesses, I guess."
Another disgruntled gamer added: "It's fine I'll just emulate everything I ever did own from them and part ways with Sony. This business practice is unacceptable."
A third raged: "I guess my PSP and vita with banger childhood games will just become useless. We aren't hating Sony enough yet."
The physical media backlash only seems to be getting worse, and as disgruntled gamers start poring over every word in every contract, we dread to think what other drama is about to surface from the depths.
