Three of the best first-person shooters of yesteryear are making a triumphant comeback with the TimeSplitters series returning to PlayStation next week.

Developed by the now defunct Free Radical Design, originally released in 2000 for the PlayStation 2, while TimeSplitters lacked a good campaign to sink your teeth into, its local competitive multiplayer provided some of the best fun with friends on the couch.

Then in 2002, we were treated to TimeSplitters 2, arguably the best entry in the series. Rather than just being a PlayStation 2 title, the sequel was also released on Xbox and the Nintendo GameCube. Sadly, we would see the last entry in the series with TimeSplitters: Future Perfect in 2005, which was a worthy entry from its predecessors, at the very least.

There were reports that the TimeSplitters series is making a comeback with a brand new game and even alpha multiplayer footage leaked online. This fourth mainline entry was also going to be developed by the revived Free Radical Design, but sadly this new TimeSplitters died with the studio once more in December 2023.

At this time, Embracer Group owns the publishing rights to TimeSpliters, and while there is no official word of us getting another new game in the series, the original trilogy is coming to PlayStation Plus on 20 August 2024.

Yep, the TimeSplitters trilogy joins the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalogue on August 20! (That means you can finally play the first game without a PS2 woo) https://t.co/NoDHOhAebh pic.twitter.com/BZLSJKxtTw

While neither of the three TimeSplitters games will include online multiplayer, they will feature local multiplayer which includes campaign co-op with TimeSplitters 2 and TimeSplitters: Future Perfect. Not to mention that they should all look extra snazzy in a higher resolution and framerate.

Hopefully, returning fans will still get a lot of enjoyment out of this series and new fans will see what all the fuss is about. Then maybe, just maybe, Embracer Group might give TimeSplitters another crack of the whip for the modern era.
