The Last of Us Part II is one of those special games that really hit all the right notes when it released back in 2020.

Rounding out the story of Ellie and Joel, it wasn't without its controversial moments, but almost everyone felt that Naughty Dog did a spectacular job in creating a game that not only hit home emotionally but was also genuinely fun to play throughout.

As such, it’s little surprise that players continue to return to explore everything it has to offer five years later, and it turns out that there's plenty more under the hood that we may not have been aware of when playing through for the first, second or even third time.

Over on Twitter/X, user Speclizer shared a stunning piece of information about a cut mechanic from the second Last of Us game the really could have elevated the experience even further.

TLOU 2 has a cut movement mechanic called 'peek mode'. It allows you to peek around corners, under objects and even over objects. Provides very minimal advantage. The entire script for it exists and can be enabled quite easily,” the post reads.

It's a pretty cool revelation and one that we would like to have seen in the finished product, though I'm sure the developer must have had their reasons for not including it when all was said and done.

It certainly would have had a major impact on our approach to playing the game, and it could have been a very useful tool to have when heading to some of the areas more densely populated with foes.

The comments underneath were filled with fans lamenting the feature's removal and speculating on why Naughty Dog may have elected to not include it by the time the game hit full release.

"Maybe the camera was much more zoomed in and restrictive when you got into cover during development, and this was disabled when they chose to have the camera work like it does today? Peeking below stuff would've been useful sometimes though," one read.

"Very funny for a third person game, but cool to see nonetheless! Stuff like this just makes me more excited for Intergalactic since ND have been cooking on that for so long," another added.

That latter comment strikes on a solid point, and it will certainly be very exciting to see what the developer has cooked up in the meantime. Let's hope they manage to do it all while avoiding crunch.
