Fans of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us have hailed the game’s opening as the ‘best in any video game, ever’ - and that’s a claim I can get behind.

It’s been a much quieter summer than The Last of Us fans perhaps expected. Originally, Naughty Dog were reportedly set to show off their upcoming The Last of Us multiplayer project at the PlayStation Showcase that took place back in May. Unfortunately, following a review from fellow studio Bungie who experienced concern over the game’s longevity, the reveal was pulled. Naughty Dog did then confirm they’re working on a new single-player experience, but we don’t know what this is. We also don’t have any season two casting news due to the ongoing writer’s and actor’s strikes. It looks as if The Last of Us Part II could receive a PS5 port soon but that too is technically unconfirmed. In the meantime though, fans are talking about the genius that is The Last of Us Part I’s opening.

The opening scene ranked amongst our own favourites here at GAMINGbible.

One Reddit user took to the site to write, “The Last of Us has the best opening of any video game ever. [...] It boils down to a couple things. I've never played a game where it felt like I was actually experiencing the end of the world, really feeling society crumble. Little details like seeing the explosion out of the window and then seeing it on TV make the apocalypse so immediate and close and because you're playing [as] Joel's daughter, you feel completely helpless and vulnerable.”

They continued, “And then’ of course, s**t hits the fan at top speed from there. [...] By the end of the opening, I was crying my eyes out. Just nothing quite like it in my opinion.” You won’t be surprised when I tell you that plenty of other fans agreed.

Someone added, “I agree. It’s one of, if not the, best intro to a game ever,” while another comment read, “It really shows how great [Naughty Dog] are at storytelling.” I can’t wait to see what they’re cooking up next.
