The Last of Us studio, Naughty Dog confirms a brand-new ‘single-player experience’.

Naughty Dog certainly is a busy studio as of late. Not only had it released The Last of Us Part I in 2022, a remake of the original PS3 game of 2013, but it also had the disastrous PC port to contend with as well as the fan's expectations of The Last of Us Part III being announced in the near future.

Then we have The Last of Us standalone multiplayer game, which was initially announced in 2022. However, details on the multiplayer game are very vague at this time. We have no idea what its formula will be or whether it will be free-to-play. Naughty Dog did release a new piece of concept art earlier this year, but that’s about it.

Fans were hoping to see the first gameplay for the multiplayer title at the most recent PlayStation Showcase event, but that was not to be. So, what’s going on with The Last of Us multiplayer offering? According to journalist Jeff Grubb, the game was supposed to be at the PlayStation Showcase, before it was pulled from the event.

Furthermore, it seems at least from the outside looking in, the multiplayer game is in a lot of trouble. In a tweet shared by DomTheBombYT, another video game journalist, Jason Schreier claimed that the game is on the brink of being cancelled.

It is claimed that Bungie was called in to assess the progress of the game, but questions were raised in regard to the ability to keep players engaged and as a result of that advice, it’s said that Naughty Dog reassessed the development of the game.

Sadly, no doubt in an attempt to get ahead of the speculation, Naughty Dog has announced that The Last of Us multiplayer game will need additional time in development. It’s also worth keeping in mind that this multiplayer game has never had a set-in-stone release date, so there’s no telling when it might arrive, if at all.

“We know many of you have been looking forward to hearing more about our The Last of Us multiplayer game,” wrote Naughty Dog in a statement. “We're incredibly proud of the job our studio has done thus far, but as development has continued, we've realised what is best for the game is to give it more time.”

Thankfully, there is some good news to report. In the same statement, Naughty Dog confirmed that other games are in development, “including a brand-new single-player experience”. While no details were shared, the developer stated that information will be shared at a later date.

As of right now, we can only speculate what this new single-player game will be. We already know that The Last of Us Part III is likely, so could this mean that we’ll finally be getting a proper new Uncharted game on PlayStation 5 or will it be something new entirely? Only time will tell.
