The Last of Us Gamers Lose It As New Part 3 'Tease' Splits Opinion

It seems that we’re being teased yet again for a potential The Last of Us Part III, or at least we hope, with fans split on what it could all mean.

It’s that time again, when fans of the popular Naughty Dog series, The Last of Us, are seemingly being teased for the long-awaited reveal of the third entry. Over the last year or so, we’ve seen plenty of teases that indicate that The Last of Us Part III announcement is just around the corner.

What’s more, while it’s not been officially confirmed yet, Naughty Dog chief Neil Druckmann hasn't ruled out The Last of Us Part III from happening, as long as its story and gameplay can do the series justice. Rather than pumping out a new game for the sake of it. But it does feel like there is the potential for at least one final chapter for Ellie and Abby.

What’s the Latest Last of Us Part III Tease?

As brought to our attention by Reddit user Jealous-Amount9022, Neil Druckmann shared on his personal Instagram account a very interesting photo of what looks to be VHS tapes for The Last of Us. These VHS tapes are labelled one to three. Naturally, some fans are hoping that this is a subtle tease for a Last of Us Part III announcement.

“More Part III teases from Neil,” suggested Jealous-Amount9022. “The VHS tapes are numbered 1-3 in order. The other items in the cart are all related to Intergalactic. Neil has always been very particular in how he presents TLOU as a franchise, especially with teasers. This feels too direct to just be a coincidence.”

Fans Are Divided Over This Latest “Tease”

“I think it's most likely just a tease for season three of the show, considering its VHS tapes of the show,” replied Kieran-Kills99, with grafittibob adding, “Looks like a box set of the TV series on VHS?… strange.”

Going through all the comments, it seems that Neil is simply sharing an image of an actual VHS box set of season one of HBO’s The Last of Us, which is over three VHS tapes. So, it’s not a box set for seasons one to three, let alone The Last of Us Part III, unfortunately.

What Is Naughty Dog Cooking Right Now?

Naughty Dog’s next game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, was announced at The Game Awards in 2024, a new IP set in a future inspired by the 80s and stars Tati Gabrielle as a ruthless bounty hunter. At the time of writing, it does not have a release date, but it is expected to arrive on PlayStation 5 sometime in 2027.

Next month, Sony is hosting its next hour-long State of Play digital showcase. While this apparent “tease” by Neil Druckmann is interesting timing, it’s probably fair to rule out any news related to The Last of Us Part III being at the show.

If we’re lucky, the best we could probably hope for from Naughty Dog is a release date and gameplay trailer for Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, and perhaps a tease for season three of HBO’s The Last of Us. But after a disappointing season two, many will be far less excited about the latter.
