How Sony Is Killing The PS4, What Features Are Going And Staying

It's not as bad as you'd think

The PlayStation 4 is pretty much dead and buried, we’re just waiting for Sony to put the final nail in the coffin.

It’s a shame too, because the PlayStation 4 was an excellent bit of a kit and gave us some of the best exclusives we’d seen in years from Sony Interactive Entertainment. God of War (2018), Horizon: Zero Dawn, The Last Of Us Part II, all bangers in their own right, only a few of many.

All good things come to an end though and with PlayStation moving ahead with plans for the PlayStation 6 it’s becoming increasingly clear that there’s no room for three consoles, which means the oldest has to go.

What Features Are Retiring on the PlayStation 4?

Earlier this week, we found that a number of features introduced with the PlayStation 4 have been quietly retired.

These include; Activity Feed Web, Title Small Storage, Title User Storage, Users and Profiles, Word Filters, and the Shared Media Web API.

What? What are they? What does that means for current PlayStation 4 owners?

Rest assured, it’s not as bad as it sounds.

In a nutshell it means that data from your PlayStation 4 activity won’t be relevant or shown on things like the PlayStation app.

For example, if you load up Horizon: Zero West on your PlayStation 4, that activity won’t be reflected on hardware or software released after that console.

It’s effectively pushing the console away so it can die with no one watching.

The PlayStation 3 suffered a similar fate.

It’s nothing to be too concerned about as it’s not like your PlayStation 4 is going to suddenly stop working or explode.

You’ll still be able to play it and you’ll still have access to your installed games so don’t go throwing it out just yet.

What it does mean though is the PlayStation 5 will soon take its place as Sony’s oldest supported hardware, especially when the PlayStation 6 comes out. Especially as earlier today, Sony pushed notifications to select PS4 owners asking them to upgrade their console.

With the way things are heading with SSD shortages and AI overhauls we’re expecting the PlayStation 6 to have its release date delayed, and when it does launch its rumoured price might turn a lot of users away at the door.

For that reason alone the PlayStation 5 has a much better chance of long-term survival than the PlayStation 4 did, especially if most of Sony’s first-party game offerings for the PlayStation 6 are just more remakes and remasters.

It won’t last forever though, as one day it’ll be as outdated and irrelevant as the PlayStation 4 currently is…
