A major new game is coming out later this week for PC, PlayStation and Xbox consoles that will be free to some users.

Dying Light: The Beast is a standalone sequel to 2022’s Dying Light 2: Stay Human, but it was originally envisioned as that game’s second DLC expansion to be released long after launch.

Following a leak describing the main story and setting in the DLC pack, Techland decided to delay it and turn the DLC into a full game. It’s not necessarily as large as the previous two games in the series, but its scope has massively expanded beyond what was originally there.

Customers who bought the Ultimate Edition of Dying Light 2 were supposed to get The Beast as an expansion at no extra cost. However, since being expanded into a full game, Techland is honouring those purchases by giving it away for free to all Ultimate Edition owners.

This applies to all PlayStation, Xbox, and PC users who bought the Ultimate Edition between its launch in 2022 and it being taken down in September 2024 following the announcement of this offer.

The Dying Light 2 Ultimate Edition also included a copy of the game, the Bloody Ties DLC pack, exclusive in-game items and rewards, as well as other digital items such as an artbook and copy of the soundtrack.

In addition to this, Ultimate Edition owners will also get The Beast’s pre-order bonuses.

Since players didn’t pre-order something they were getting for free, it understandably caused some confusion as to whether the Hero of Harran pre-order bonus would be available to them.

“Get ready for a unique blend of open world and action survival horror with Dying Light: The Beast,” reads the game’s official summary.

“You are Kyle Crane. After being captured by the Baron and enduring his painful experiments for years, you escape. But now, a battle rages inside you: zombie DNA clashes with human, and you struggle to control the beast within. You want revenge... but first you must tame it. It's your only option.

“Once you enter the zombie-infested Castor Woods, every battle will be a fight for survival… especially when night falls.”

Dying Light: The Beast launches this Thursday, 18th September, 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Last-generation versions for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are also in the works, and planned for release towards the end of the year.
