If you’re a fan of Cyberpunk 2077 and Vampire Survivors, then this free taster for a new roguelike might be for you.
We all know that maintaining our hobby of playing video games is not cheap, even if we try to shop on a strict budget, and there’s not many feelings worse than wasting our hard-earned money on a game that ends up being a major disappointment.
Subscription services such as PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass are great ways of saving money. No matter the tier, a monthly subscription is much cheaper than a newly released AAA game. Granted, we might not always get major releases on launch, but it’s a solid money-saving tactic nonetheless.
Another way of saving money is by playing a demo for a game that’s on our radar. Sure, it will only give you a sample, but it will certainly give us the best indication of whether or not that game might be worth a purchase.

The free taster in question is for the indie game developed by Tape Corps, Sodaman, which is seemingly not only inspired by the likes of Cyberpunk 2077 and Vampire Survivors, but also cult 80s action movies like They Live.
“Sodaman is a bullet-heaven roguelike where you play as a supersoldier fighting alien hordes with soda powers,” reads the synopsis of the game. “Find game-breaking sodas and concoct custom cocktails. Discover planets, unlock weapons, sodas, cybernetics, power-up cards, and more. But first, crack open a cold one.”

Judging by the gameplay trailer for Sodaman, the action is fast and frantic, the waves of enemies will pose quite the challenge, especially the further you progress, and it has plenty of weapon and ability upgrades to keep the fight going.
On the PlayStation Store, Sodaman has a very respectable four out of five stars, with 55% of players giving it the maximum rating, at the time of writing. On the PC platform Steam, it’s currently rated as “Mostly Positive” from nearly 700 user reviews.
“I picked up Sodaman for the price of a few sodas, and somehow it delivered more entertainment than the actual sodas,” wrote Steam user PACmanDRO.
“The game wastes absolutely no time. Within minutes, you’re already blasting through enemies like you accidentally drank a 12-pack of energy drinks mixed with liquid confidence. The progression is fast, the action is nonstop, and before long, you’re so overpowered that the enemies should probably be filing complaints with HR.”
“Great game in the genre. Lots of builds and good writing. I don't have any complaints after 11 hrs,” said Trep Maul. “I just hope they add a few more weapons, though.”
“The game using AI for voice acting makes me sad because this has some serious potential, and I'm confused why they didn't get friends/family to voice act, as visually this game is awesome, and gameplay is giving nimrods,” explained Sweecoh. “I recommend it, if u buy it on sale, but please, for the love of the game, get some real voice actors at some point”
Sodaman is available on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S (including the demo). If you enjoy the demo, then you might be pleased to know that the full game costs less than £10/$10 at the maximum price.
