PS5 Drops Two New Free RPG Offerings, Early Christmas Present

PlayStation gamers get two freebies just in time for Christmas, and they’re all about one of 2026’s best-looking RPGs.

2025 has been a big year for RPG games. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 took the title of Game of the Year but has since ran into some trouble regarding its use of generative AI, resulting in one of its awards being taken away.

We’re sure 2026 will bring just as impactful RPGs and PlayStation 5 owners can get a taste of what’s to come right now through some free demos.

The demos we’re talking about are for an upcoming film called The Legend of Heroes: Trails beyond the Horizon, developed by Nihon Falcom and PH3 GmbH and due for launch in January 2026.

Its Steam description reads: “The future of an entire continent is at stake in this milestone entry in the Trails series! Explore the vast Calvard Republic with three different protagonists, nurture connections, and master powerful skills in both real-time and turn-based battles as you uncover the secrets at the core of Zemuria!”

The Legend of Heroes: Trails beyond the Horizon is your classic turn-based RPG and it looks like it’ll be right at home with anime fans.

You can also find the game on the PlayStation store and it's taken a bit of an unorthodox approach to its demos. Rather than having one demo it’s instead offering two.

The smaller of the two demos focuses on the story, with players exploring more of the game’s world and interacting with some of its characters. Any progress made in this demo will be transferable to the full version of the game should you choose to buy it.

In order to sample the battle mode you’ll have to download a slightly larger demo that gives you a taste of the combat. This demo is also an exclusive for PlayStation for some reason. All in all it’s a very weird set-up.

While we’re not expecting The Legend of Heroes: Trails beyond the Horizon to come out of 2026 as its Game of the Year, what we’ve seen so far isn’t too bad, and I’m personally interested in checking out the demos.

For the full game interested gamers won’t have to wait long, as The Legend of Heroes: Trails beyond the Horizon is due for launch on 15 January 2026, so you won’t have long to wait after Christmas has concluded.
