Since it was first released way back in 1994, PlayStation consoles have been the cornerstone of gaming.

However, with each new iteration bringing with it a new and updated design, it is clear to see how much time has passed when you compare the look of the PlayStation with the most recent PlayStation 5 Pro.

Not only have the consoles themselves adapted over the years, but so have their accompanying controllers and there is one PlayStation feature that many of us refuse to bring up to date.

The ‘Start’ and ‘Select’ buttons.

Or the ‘Create’ and ‘Options’ buttons as they are known in recent years.

For the PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3, the two buttons on the center of the controller were simply known as ‘Start’ and ‘Select’.

However, with the arrival of the PlayStation 4 controller, the buttons were unceremoniously changed, now standing for ‘Create’ for when you want to take screenshots or capture game footage, or ‘Options’ for opening the game’s menu.

Despite this change coming into effect with the PS4 back in 2013 and is seemingly here to stay, it seems as though the majority of PlayStation users refuse or simply forget to call the iconic buttons anything other than ‘Start’ and ‘Select’.

The discussion recently kicked off over on r/playstation when one user posted a meme of the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller with the caption, “Admit it, you still to this day call it the ‘Start’ button”.

With over 1,000 comments, a quick scroll through will tell you all you need to know.

We all still call it the ‘Start’ button.

“Why? Does it have another name?” one user joked.

“This will always be the ‘Start’ button,” another user agreed.

For user Twice_the_Magic, it is a hill they will die on.

“They can try to rename it. I REFUSE,” they exclaimed.

With the video game industry being modernised each day, it is clear that some users just refuse to get with the times, at least when it comes to the buttons on a PlayStation controller.

Nostalgia is a powerful thing and so I’m sure many of us would not mind if Sony reversed its decision to introduce the ‘Create’ and ‘Options’ buttons.

Nevertheless, it seems as though many users would not care either way as, for them, it will always be the iconic ‘Start’ and ‘Select’.
