PS5 free update is exactly what we've been waiting for

Great for retro gamers

PlayStation is working on a big free update for the PS5 Pro, if a new report is to be believed.

Sony regularly supports its PlayStation systems with new features and updates, to help improve the experience for players.

In the past, we’ve seen updates to the home screen, as well as compatibility fixes and performance improvements behind the scenes.

For the retro enthusiasts out there, PlayStation has dedicated itself to supporting its older library titles, especially since the 30th anniversary last year.

This has come in the form of themes that represent each era of PlayStation, and also a bunch of new classic titles hitting the PlayStation Store and PlayStation Plus Premium.

Now, a new report suggests that Sony may be looking at improving the retro selection on PS5, specifically on the Pro variant of the system.

According to source Moore’s Law Is Dead (thanks, ComicBook), this new update should improve the experience of retro titles on the PS5 Pro.

The report states that Sony is updating PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution), its proprietary upscaling tech, to also apply to retro games.

Previously, this feature required a base resolution of 864p, which many retro games do not hit.

Sony is now allegedly updating the tech so that retro games from the PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP can be upscaled using PSSR, meaning games should look better on the PS5 Pro.

Or at least, they will have more visual clarity and cleaner interfaces. Whether you think they look better or not should come down to personal preference. Some prefer that low-res ‘90s/00s look, after all.

Of course, take the report with a grain of salt as this is all just rumour at this point. However, Moore’s Law Is Dead is a reliable source when it comes specifically to the PS5 Pro.

Still, you’re better off waiting for official confirmation from Sony.

There hasn’t been any comment on this yet, and plans are always subject to change of course.

If it is true, it should be good news for those who enjoy playing retro games on their PS5 Pro systems.
