Not for the faint of heart though

PlayStation Plus subscribers are in love with this superb RPG, that many consider to be as impressive as a next-gen game.

With rumour of the PlayStation 6 launching in either 2027 or 2028, it’s clear the current generation of gaming is coming to an end, before it really got started too.

There are few games that you can consider truly next-gen but Demon's Souls (2020) is definitely one of them, ironic as it’s a remake of a game from 2009.

FromSoftware is widely known as the creator and king of soulslike games but the craze didn’t kick-off with Dark Souls, it debuted years before with Demon's Souls.

The story goes that Sony wanted a game to compete with The Elder Scrolls: IV Oblivion but very few developers wanted to compete with Bethesda’s RPG. Hidetaka Miyazaki eventually stepped up and began work on Demon's Souls, and while it didn’t really compare to Oblivion, it arguably did something far more impressive.

Years later' Demon's Souls was remade for the PlayStation 5 and added to PlayStation Plus, where it currently sits and waits for you to play it like so many others have.

In a thread on Reddit by user KantinkaObrempong subscribers were asked, “What are the best free PlayStation games with next-gen graphics? Looking for free or PS Plus titles that really show off the PS5’s visuals. Any recommendations that look amazing without spending a cent?”

Several games will likely come to mind upon hearing such a question and several games were shared, but many comments highlighted Demon's Souls above others.

Now I’m a little biased as I’m a huge fan of FromSoftware’s work but it was only fairly recently that I actually gave Demon's Souls a go for myself.

The game has a reputation for being much harder than FromSoftware’s later titles and while I wouldn’t agree, I would say it’s less forgiving.

If you love the Dark Souls games but haven’t played, I’d recommend giving it a go as you’ll notice several areas and bosses that’ll feel familiar to you, as many directly inspired the games that followed.

PlayStation Plus subscribers are also correct in saying it’s one of the most visually stunning games on the platform. While much of the gameplay was left unchanged aside from the odd quality-of-life improvement, the overhaul to the graphics is immense, and a true showcase of the PlayStation 5’s power.

You can play it with a subscription to PlayStation Plus Extra, and while it’s definitely not for everyone, I’d still suggest giving it a go.
