The new games for the February line-up have an extra bittersweet sting after Sony announced a significant change to the service.

Yesterday, we eagerly awaited the latest batch of free games for PlayStation Plus. No sooner had they been revealed another announcement swiftly followed.

From January 2026, PS4 titles will “no longer be a key benefit” of the subscription.

Now might be time to take advantage of the gorgeous Midnight Black PS5 collection

This means that PS4 versions of games will only be “occasionally” available via PlayStation Plus.

According to Sony’s statement, as per X account @Wario64, this alteration is due to the download patterns of service users.

“As many of our players are currently playing on PS5, and have shifted toward redeeming and accessing PS5 titles [...] PlayStation Plus is also evolving with this trend and will focus on offering PS5 titles.”

Frustrating though that is, Sony has said that PS4 titles already redeemed via the service will remain available to users as long as they remain subscribers.

The PS5 is just over four years old, with some users arguing that such a major change to the subscription is long “overdue”.

Many of the comments that followed matched this opinion, suggesting that another year of PS4 games being available was too long, and that the change should happen “this year”.

However, while the majority of players are in agreement, they’re still not happy at the possibility of the service hiking its prices while users receive fewer features.

“Less offerings and the price of PS+ will go up. Bookmark this,” commented @Call_me_J_D.

User @gosuprime022 said, “Yet the Plus price stays the same. Great scam, Sony.”

For those who challenged this remark, wondering why the price should change, the same individual explained, “People are locked in for a year, but are losing PS4 support.”

Even though there are plenty of gamers with a PS5, there are also thousands who still rely on their PS4.

With the rising cost of consoles, keeping older models for longer makes financial sense.

Unfortunately, time marches on, ultimately leaving some players with a looming deadline.
