After yet another PlayStation Plus price-hike the company has issued another freebie, but it’s failing to soothe disgruntled subscribers.
PlayStation recently announced that the cost of PlayStation Plus Essential was going up for new subscribers only.
While current subscriptions won’t be affected, it’s still rubbed gamers the wrong way as Essential is the only way you can play online. It’s also going to bring future free games under more scrutiny, especially if they’re undesirable titles.
The latest freebie hasn’t quelled the frenzy as unless you play the game it’s for, it’s pretty much worthless.
Every quarter, PlayStation Plus subscribers are given a free download for the smash-hit multiplayer game Marvel Rivals.

If you haven’t played it yet, it’s basically Overwatch but with characters plucked from the Marvel multiverse. It’s good fun and free-to-play, much like its Blizzard-owned rival.
The quarterly PlayStation Plus freebie usually grants players a free skin and some in-game currency, and this quarter’s offering is an MCU-inspired skin for Mantis from Guardians of the Galaxy. You also get 300 Chrono Tokens to use in the in-game shop.
It’s not a bad freebie if you actually play Marvel Rivals. Mantis is a great support character and her popularity has skyrocketed since she appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
Unfortunately, the recent price-hike has put a dampener on the whole thing. White, it’s nice that PlayStation still throws out free stuff from time to time. It's hardly won any favour back after its recent activity.
Like we said, Marvel Rivals is free-to-play, you don’t even need PlayStation Plus Essential to hop into its servers so it’s not like it magically makes your subscription worth keeping.

PlayStation has spoken in the past about revising PlayStation Plus to deliver the maximum amount of value to its subscribers but we’re really not getting that impression following some of the recent decisions.
Inflating the price of PlayStation Plus’ worst tier is one thing but even the games that have been added to it recently haven’t been all that exciting.
Compared to Xbox Game Pass, which recently slashed the price of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and continues to add first-party AAA games on the day of release, the difference is night and day.
PlayStation isn’t down for the count yet though, as while the news regarding its subscription service is disappointing, fans are looking ahead with optimism for the next State of Play showcase.
Only Marvel’s The Wolverine has been confirmed to be part of the event so far but several big names are expected to be here, including the long-awaited sequel to Hogwarts Legacy.
