PlayStation drops free download for gorgeous new game, no PS Plus needed

Epic Mickey is a platforming action adventure that was originally released in 2010 and stars everyone’s favourite Disney mouse. At the time of its initial release, it didn't blow the industry away with its reviews but it had earned a respectable score of 73 on the aggregate website, Metacritic and now, it’s getting a modern remake.

“Every stroke of your magic brush matters! Use paint to restore beauty and harmony or thinner to alter your environment and uncover hidden secrets,” reads the synopsis of Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed. “Your choices influence Mickey's destiny and change the outcome of this artistic odyssey. Will you become the epic hero Wasteland needs?”

Hang on, the synopsis says: “Will you (as Mickey) become the epic hero Wasteland needs?” But, if memory serves me correctly, all the evil shenanigans going on in the game are pretty much Mickey’s fault. Yet, here’s Mickey, quite literally painting himself as a hero, the cheek of it!

In our hands-on preview of Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed, GAMINGbible’s Kate said: “This is much more than a straight-forward remake from Purple Lamp. The studio has managed to weave a sense of magic and wonderment into the game that goes beyond what I could have hoped for.”

To this day, the 2010 game is still a lot of fun to play. However, now that this beloved classic has been modernised, it not only plays better, but it looks better than ever too and best of all, you can play it for free right now via the PlayStation Store as well as other platforms.

The free playable demo is available on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed will be released on 24 September 2024.
