We’re going to look back at 2023 as a landmark year in gaming. It’s been a year chock full of incredible releases. Already, we’ve had Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores, Sea of Stars, Disney Illusion Island, Baldur’s Gate 3, Street Fighter 6, Resident Evil 4 … I could go on. There’s been a little bit of something for everyone.

The fun doesn’t stop now though. We still have four months to go. Starfield will leave its early access period tomorrow, releasing to all. After that, the next big landmark is perhaps Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. It’s undoubtedly Son’y biggest release of the year so to celebrate, they previously unveiled a themed DualSense controller to launch alongside the game, in addition to PS5 plates. As we near the game’s launch month though, fans are branding the design as ‘lazy’.

Take a look at Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 in action below.

As reported by TheGamer, some fans have had their products arrive and they’re really not impressed. The red and black design is supposed to represent the symbiote taking over Spidey. An overwhelming majority of the PS5 plates are just plain black though, except for the corner of red and the two Spidey symbols. Reddit user DEXu09 posted a photo of the black back plate, captioning it, “How lazy can Sony be? This design is terrible.”

Primerion-ken added, “They wanted a quick cash grab. Both controller and plates design are bad and lacklustre,” while UnkownMeme1337 said, “Controller is good imo but the f**king plates, holy s**t.” PotatoLord_69 wrote, “I think the side with red and black is good, but the other side that’s just all black with the tiny logo is awful.”

I agree with that latter sentiment. The red and black side is promising but on the whole, the design is a tad simplistic - especially when you compare to the Starfield plates currently available for the Xbox Series X which include a detailed four-plate design. Sony are only just beginning their venture into limited edition plates, so hopefully we’ll continue to see an improvement.
