PlayStation Drops Absolutely Massive Free Open-World RPG, No PS Plus Required

You only have a few days left to try it out for yourself though

This massive RPG is currently free-to-play on PlayStation for the next few days, and you don’t even need a PlayStation Plus subscription to download it.

If you weren’t entirely thrilled with this month’s PlayStation Plus lineup, you do have another option to take advantage of this week– but not for long.

As revealed during QuakeCon 2025, Bethesda Softworks and ZeniMax Online Studios' 2014 MMORPG The Elder Scrolls Online is currently free to play on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 until August 12.

The trial grants you access to everything in the base game, and your progress will even carry over into the full game (if you decide to purchase it after the trial period runs out).

Now, you don’t need a PlayStation Plus subscription to download the trial, but I’m a little bit confused as to whether you need a subscription to actually play The Elder Scrolls Online.

I’ve seen a bunch of conflicting information about this, so I can’t say for sure, but it is an MMO. You sort of need to be able to play the game online (it’s part of the whole “Massively Multiplayer Online” thing), so I’m going to assume that you still need a PlayStation Plus subscription regardless.

Also, if you are already a PlayStation Plus Extra subscriber, this will be a bit of a pointless announcement for you, as The Elder Scrolls Online has been available as a free download for quite some time now.

However, if you do play it and enjoy your time with it, you’ll be happy to learn that buying the game after the free trial isn’t going to break the bank.

As of writing, the game is currently only £3.74 on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. This offer does run out on August 13 though (which is, sneakily, only one day after the trial ends).
