PlayStation fans aren’t too happy with recent comments made by Sony Interactive Entertainment’s president and CEO regarding the future of their next generation of hardware, but I can’t help but feel like the anger is a tiny bit misplaced.
The PlayStation 6 feels like it should still be a long way off, but it’s clear that Sony is investing a lot of time and resources into preparing for the next generation.
PlayStation 5 owners think that they’re focusing on the next gen earlier than they should however, following recent comments made by SIE’s president and CEO Hideaki Nishino.
As spotted by VGC's Andy Robinson, the topic of the PlayStation 6 came up during a recently published interview with investors on Sony's official website, and Nishino had this to say regarding the console's future.

“We now have a large ecosystem of highly engaged players across both the PlayStation 5 and the PlayStation 4 generations. So naturally, therefore, there’s a huge interest in our next generation console strategy,” Nishino revealed.
“While we cannot share further details at this stage, the future of the platform is top of mind. We are committed to exploring a new and enhanced way for players to engage with our content and services.”
So, what part of this is upsetting folks over on the r/consoles subreddit? It’s the part where Nishino said that the PS6 is “top of mind”, because PS5 owners think that the current generation deserves a lot more attention first.
“That's the life cycle I guess. It won't get better because they will still have to develop games that work on a base ps5 for years. So the ps6 will seem lackluster too”, commented user Aggravating_Bids.

“I'm a little confused by Sony. They offered up the PS5, hardly any games, with most games being on PS4 too. Yet, it sells really well. What are people actually buying it for? Now, we're talking about the PS6? I feel like this has to be the most pointless iteration of the Playstation”, replied another user.
“They should have never started developing those live service games. they cancelled em an now we barely have any new games coming out from Sonys games studios as a result”, commented user gorendor.
On one hand, it’s understandable that some folks aren’t happy about that. The PlayStation 5 still feels like it has a lot left to give, and its library, at least when compared to the likes of the PlayStation 4, does feel somewhat underwhelming.
On the other hand, this is pretty par for the course as far as hardware development goes. Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo don’t just start looking into making a new console a year or two before they plan to release it.

You don’t make it as far as the big three have without planning ahead. This is relatively normal practice, and Sony will be looking towards the PlayStation 7 almost immediately after releasing the PlayStation 6.
