PlayStation Plus Gamers Concerned Following Price Hike

Users are understandably worried

Following the news that Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription fees are about to be increased by 50%, PlayStation users are worried that Sony will be following in its footsteps.

Yesterday saw Microsoft break the news that some Xbox Game Pass tiers would be receiving a drastic price increase just a year after its last one.

In an attempt to overhaul the subscription service, an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership will now cost £22.99 in the UK ($29.99 in the US).

This is a 50% increase from its previous price tag of $19.99 in the US.

As a result, millions of Xbox Game Pass subscribers have expressed their outrage and even taken to the site (when it eventually came back online) to cancel their memberships altogether.

So it is perhaps no surprise that PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 users are worried that Sony will do the same and recently took to r/PlayStationPlus to share their thoughts.

“With Xbox Game Pass Ultimate jumping to $30/month, I’m really wondering what Sony’s thinking right now. Are they gonna see this as a chance to bump up PS Plus prices too? Or will they hold steady and try to look like the better deal?” User nwassassin12 asked.

“Thing is, Sony doesn’t do day-one releases like Game Pass does, which kinda helps justify the price hike on Xbox’s side. But if PS Plus starts creeping up without adding anything new, that could seriously backfire.”

With over 100 comments in less than 24-hours, it is clear that this user is not the only person worrying about what this could mean for PlayStation Plus members.

“Price increases are inevitable anyway, but Game Pass Ultimate is now $360 annually,” the top comment reads.

“PS Plus Premium is $160. I don't think they can get away with charging as much as Microsoft due to lack of day one games but they will inevitably raise prices again, maybe to like $180 in a year."

They continued, “I think this price point by Microsoft is an admittance that day one AAA flagship games on the service were never even close to sustainable at the price point they were offering. Can't say the same for Sony.”

At the time of writing, Sony has not announced any future price hikes but as this Reddit user suggests, it is probably inevitable with the price of both hardware and software increasing every year.

“They’re not really comparable products, but yeah, Sony will probably jump at any opportunity to increase prices,” user terrordactylz explained.

Let us just hope that Microsoft learns from its mistakes and that Sony does not follow in its footsteps.
