PlayStation 4 Support Finally Coming To an End Following Historic Run

End of an era

The PlayStation 4 had a generational run, but all good things must come to an end as the console will no longer be supported going forward, apparently.

While I’m sure many have fond memories of the PlayStation 4 it did become a bit of a burden when the PlayStation 5 came out.

We spent so much money on a shiny new PlayStation 5 only to get the odd exclusive here and there and a bunch of updated PlayStation 4 games. Many games were also made for both consoles, meaning the PlayStation 5 version couldn’t go as far as it probably could have.

For the time being the PlayStation 4 is still a decent console to own if you haven’t upgraded yet but with the PlayStation 6 quickly approaching it was only a matter of time till the console got the axe.

According to a report by Insider Gaming several PlayStation 4 services will be discontinued over the next few months as Sony slowly pushes the console into obscurity.

It’s said the following services will no longer receive support; Activity Feed Web API, Title, Small Storage (TSS), Title User Storage (TUS), Users and Profiles, Word Filters, Shared Media Web API.

Worth noting that this is allegedly for games released after Spring 2026, so these services won’t be affected for your existing games.

This means if you haven’t upgraded yet you’ll have more incentive to do so, but it’d be perfectly understandable if you decided to just wait for the PlayStation 6 instead, as it’s probably only a couple of years away at this point.

Speaking of the PlayStation 6 it sounds like a beast of a console, which could be a good or bad thing depending on the way you look at it.

Enhanced hardware sounds great on paper until the price becomes a factor, though rumours say the PlayStation 6 will be a similar price to the PlayStation 5 Pro, but we’ll believe it when we see it.

The most interesting rumour about the next generation of PlayStation consoles is that Sony will be taking a page out of Nintendo’s book and producing a handheld. Not a successor to the PlayStation Portal either, an actual handheld that can also be docked to a TV like a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2.
