PlayStation 5 system update makes 'huge' change that divides fans

A new update has landed

PlayStation 5 has received a new system update, but one major change has divided fans. It all revolves around downloading licenses for games you own.

Essentially, the latest update has changed the way the console reads the licenses on your PSN account, allowing you to download licenses only for games currently installed.

PlayStation's once iconic exclusive, Silent Hill 2, has been remade and it's superb

Before the update, you could download all of them in one big batch, which was the preferred option for those wanting to take their PS5 offline or jailbreak it.

This is further explained by Twitter user Lance McDonald who reported on the changes over the weekend.

The first tweet in the thread says, “The newest PS5 Firmware changes the “Restore Licenses” screen so you can now only download licenses for games you currently already have installed. Previously it was just a progress bar and would download every license you own.”

What this means for those who like to jailbreak their systems is that you can’t get access to everything you own in one go.

This used to mean you could download all licenses and then install games via a USB drive as jailbroken hardware cannot connect to PSN.

McDonald continues to explain, “This means that if you jailbreak your console you’re pretty much gonna be stuck using pirated dumps of games and your legit library will mostly be unplayable now.”

This seems to be a move on Sony’s part to prevent users creating illegal dumps of games to share with others.

It should be obvious that this will not impact legitimate use cases of the every day player and only those looking to jailbreak the console or mod and edit games.

Fans are, on one hand celebrating the impact this will have on piracy, while others are calling the change “awful,” “crazy,” and saying “Yikes. Another hurdle for jailbreakers.”
