New PlayStation 5 game shadow drops, and not even the devs knew about it

New PlayStation game Ultrawings 2 just dropped out of nowhere - without even the developers knowing about its release.

A rite of passage for any game release is well, waiting for it to be released. Whether it’s the 10 year plus wait for Grand Theft Auto VI or the mythical sequel to Hollow Knight, we are all waiting for something. However, sometimes a game will just launch out of nowhere, surprising fans. Typically, developers are in the know though.

That isn't the case for Ultrawings 2, a mission-based flight sim from Bit Planet Games. Previously released for the PC and Meta Quest, Ultrawings 2 is now available on the PlayStation 5 and PSVR2 which is something that neither fans nor the developers expected.

Released on PSVR2 on 25 January, Bit Planet Games had previously revealed that the flight sim would be heading to console at a later date. However, when fans anticipating the sequel looked at the PlayStation Store recently, they were pleasantly surprised to see it already available to purchase. However, that wasn’t the original plan and its release came as a shock to the developers themselves.

“Shadow dropping Ultrawings 2 on PSVR2 today was not on our 2024 bingo card but, well, here we are,” posted the developers to Twitter.

One fan replied sharing their excitement for the sequel but admitted they were “surprised to see it” to which Bit Planet Games replied, “It was unforeseen” and that some “relatively minor issues” have already been fixed and will arrive with the day one patch.

After the shock arrival of Ultrawings 2, Kotaku spoke to Bit Planet and gave them a chance to explain. Most importantly, it was a chance to ask if it was actually a mistake on Sony’s part.

“We don’t think so,” Bit Planet said. “We don’t know what happened. It could be something we did or didn’t do. Just don’t know (yet). I will say we don’t think Sony accidentally released the game.”

It has since been revealed that Bit Planet were aiming for a 9 February release date so luckily, the game wasn’t released too far in advance.
