PlayStation 1 and Astro Bot comeback doesn't 'click' with angry gamers

Retro gamers rejoice because the PlayStation 1 is apparently rising from the great gaming graveyard and is getting ready to remind us why it's one of the greats.

Sure, the end of the noughties might've been popularised by the Nintendo 64 and Goliaths like Super Mario 64 and GoldenEye 007, but our nostalgia senses are tingling in 2026 for reasons other than the upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake.

You might've heard rumours that the OG PlayStation is getting the LEGO treatment, and as it threatens to drain our wallets, there could be another perk to sweeten the deal.

What are the LEGO PS1 rumours?

Ideas about a LEGO PS1 are nothing new, and way back in January 2023, we referred to the concept as a thing of beauty. Jump forward 2.5 years, and we're inclined to say the same thing.

Then again, at a time when Sony is being raked over the coals after confirming it's killing off physical discs in January 2028, the jokes have quickly flowed in about this mythical PS1 LEGO set being little more than a download code inside the box.

Over on the r/Legoleak subreddit, noted leaker Brick Tap claims that the LEGO PS1 set is releasing on October 1 and will consist of an impressive 1,911 pieces. That should keep us busy in the month of Halloween and give us something to do following Marvel Wolverine's PS5 release on September 15.

We already knew a LEGO PS1 was in review thanks to it crossing over 10,000 signatures on the LEGO Ideas site, while previous fan sets that have become a reality include the Sonic the Hedgehog-themed Green Hill Zone.

It's a common misconception, but currently, most LEGO gaming sets have been developed in-house instead of coming from the Ideas fan community.

Reportedly costing $160, the PS1 set is pretty pricey but comes in under the list price of 2020's LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System 71374. The NES set was a more elaborate one, including an actual LEGO TV and jumping Super Mario Bros. backdrop, which is why it commanded a $229.99 price tag.

By all accounts, the LEGO PS1 will just be a standard grey console. Still, you could get something else for your troubles...

Astro Bot's LEGO comeback

When you tend ot think of PlayStation in the '90s, mascots like Lara Croft and Crash Bandicoot will likely come to mind. The problem is, both of them have lost their PlayStation exclusivity, meaning getting the rights to them is likely a legal nightmare.

With this, Astro Bot has become the console's unofficial mascot. The likes of Crash, Sackboy, and Kratos have all had their go in various eras, but for the modern PlayStation branding, it's that bumbling bot.

As for Astro Bot, Brick Tap claims that the LEGO PS1 set comes with a free 40899 Astro Bot gift. There's no clarification on what that gift is, although we imagine an Astro Bot minifig would be a popular choice.

Given that the PS1 arrived on the scene in 1996 and Astro Bot didn't land until 2013's The Playroom tech demo on the PS4, it feels like a bit of a disconnect here. This wasn't the only complaint on the LEGO Leaks subreddit, with the conversation obviously looping back to the disc backlash.

One disgruntled gamer wrote: "Well, how were they [LEGO] to know Sony would sh*t the bed when they signed the contract probably over a year ago."

Another joked: "Set falls apart after the 10-year license expires

A third said: "Yup. 2 months ago, I would have been all over this. Not anymore!"

LEGO gaming sets continue to be popular, but whether already irate PlayStation fans will stump up $160 for what's effectively a box of grey bricks remains to be seen.
