GTA 6 fans divided over PlayStation exclusivity

Sony seemingly strikes a deal

GTA VI fans are divided over what looks to be an exclusive deal between Sony PlayStation and Rockstar Games.

Earlier this week, social media went into a meltdown when Rockstar Games suddenly dropped the long-awaited second trailer for GTA VI and, quite literally, broke the internet.

To say that the second trailer was worth the wait would be an understatement. To put it simply, the latest GTA VI trailer is a thing of beauty, as indicated by its ever-increasing and record-breaking YouTube view count.

At the very end of the trailer, fans were surprised to learn that it stated that gameplay was captured using a PlayStation 5, and not even a PS5 Pro. So, has Sony struck some sort of marketing deal with Rockstar Games?

If so, it seemingly wouldn’t be the first time, because in the trailer for the new-gen release of GTA V, it was advertised as coming to PlayStation 5, despite also being released on Xbox Series X/S.

This shouldn't come as much of a surprise, because ever since the first game in the Grand Theft Auto series was released in 1997 on the original PlayStation, both Sony and Rockstar Games have had a legacy relationship, so to speak.

What’s more, Microsoft infamously rejected exclusive rights to GTA III, and with PlayStation taking up the deal for PS2, it played a huge role in releasing one of the most important video games of all time.

From that moment, at least until the release of GTA IV in 2008, Sony had time-exclusive console rights to mainline entries in the series, including GTA: Vice City and GTA: San Andreas.

That being said, Microsoft did look to have struck some sort of deal with Rockstar Games by bagging GTA VI expansions on Xbox 360 before PlayStation 3 with The Lost of the Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony.

With the new trailer captured on PS5 though, it looks like it's once again Sony on top which may upset Xbox owners who are undoubtedly going to spend much of the next year wondering just how deep the deal will run.

Could we, for example, see any exclusive PlayStation content?

Despite having a release date for GTA VI on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, PC gamers are still waiting to see when they can get in on the action.

I’d speculate that it’s likely that GTA VI might arrive on PC at least a year after the console launch, but only time will tell.
