If you were worrying you might’ve seen the last of Christopher Judge’s Kratos, this should ease your concerns.
Santa Monica Studio surfaced during Sony’s recent State of Play to announce a slew of God of War projects.
God of War: Sons of Sparta, a side-scrolling prequel, was shadowdropped to mixed reviews, with the original Kratos, TC Carson, revealing that a remake of the full original trilogy is in the works.
That project was described as being very early in development, so it’s fair to say that we likely won’t see said remakes for a number of years.

We also don’t know whether they’ll all drop at once or whether Santa Monica will launch one at a time.
I know you should never look a gift horse in the mouth, but the event did leave me wondering what this all meant for God of War’s recent mainline games.
Would Kratos, Freya, and Atreus return? I’m personally not ready to say goodbye.
Thankfully, it looks as if another mainline instalment is secretly in the works.
Last week, it came to light that Santa Monica is reportedly also developing another secret project which is not a new IP.
Kratos Could Be Heading Back To Where It All Began
It’s very suspicious then that Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson has now claimed that the next mainline entry will take players back to Greece.
Henderson said on the Insider Gaming podcast that a source had told him that the next mainline entry will feature a scythe as a weapon for Kratos.
“I’ve got a feeling that it’s going to go back to Greek mythology,” Henderson speculated based on his intel.
“I’m now wondering, is that why they are doing the remake of the original trilogy? And then, you know, six, 12 months later release the next mainline one.”
It’s an interesting theory, and one that definitely makes sense.

I do have to urge you to take this with a pinch of salt though as the scythe is the only real scrap of evidence we have, if Henderson’s source is to be believed.
What mythology this might relate to is all speculative.
I do see why Henderson might link the scythe to Greece. It does explain why Sons of Sparta and the original trilogy remakes have come to fruition.
Then again, I don’t think either of those projects demand a mainline return to Greece.
I don’t believe scythes were particularly used in Ancient Greece either, but sickles were - and it’s easy to confuse the two I suppose.
We can’t rule out Egypt though, where the khopesh was used which is a variation of a sickle.
There was a theory going around that the Valhalla DLC teased a switch to Mayan mythology.
From what I understand, weapons there were more club and spear based.
Personally, I don’t mind where Kratos heads next as long as he heads somewhere. I don’t want to say goodbye to the soft rebooted version of the character.
Let’s hope Santa Monica’s secret project is what we’ve all been hoping for.
