Ghost of Yotei Sequel Splits Fanbase, New Game Mode Proposed

I just want more Jin Sakai

The Ghost of Yōtei sequel splits fans with a new game mode proposed.

Released in 2020, Ghost of Tsushima instantly became one of my favourite games of its generation when it originally arrived on PlayStation 4 before being ported the following year on PlayStation 5, with the Iki Island expansion.

In Ghost of Tsushima, Jin Sakai, a young man brought up in nobility and the samurai code. However, when the Mongols invade Tsushima Island, he is forced to question everything he ever knew and his morals in the hope of saving his people and those he loves.

Then we have Ghost of Yōtei, which was only released this month on PlayStation 5 and is set roughly 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima, and stars a vengeful ronin named Atsu.

“Ghost of Yōtei is pure cinematic brilliance, and Sucker Punch Productions deserves to be commended once more for knocking it out of the park and, in some ways, topping its predecessor,” I said in my review. “Ghost of Yōtei is one of the absolute best games of 2025.”

Where should the series go next?

The natural assumption would be for Ghost of Yōtei to have an expansion, just like Ghost of Tsushima has with Iki Island. However, what about the next mainline game in the series? One Reddit user has made an intriguing recommendation.

“The sequel to Ghost of Yōtei should be Ghost of Ryukyu, set in Okinawa during the Ryukyu Disposition, and also features a new mode: Tarantino mode,” suggested NoOrganization392.

From what I can tell, NoOrganization392 doesn't explain what the “Tarantino mode” would be. I’d assume they mean more over-the-top blood and close-up shots, which sounds a lot like what’s already offered in Ghost of Yōtei, but I could be wrong.

“I think going into the Meiji or Taisho era goes against the spirit of the series. If we go this far, we're getting into the late 19th Century, and we're setting foot firmly into the ‘Empire of Japan’ era, and we wouldn't be seeing Samurai at all. Hell, didn't the Setsuna Rebellion happen this same year? Samurai were done at this point,” explained Watts121.

“Sounds nice, but they should stay in the Edo period and give us the cities of Kyoto and Osaka,” said Nuni2xTimes.

“Devs have said they're not going into the modern age, and that the series revolves around sword combat,” revealed Dandorious-Chiggens.

Personally, after a Ghost of Yōtei expansion, I’d love to see a new game starring Jin Sakai once more. After that, I think Sucker Punch Productions should have a crack at creating a Wild West game to give Red Dead Redemption a run for its money.
