This Max Payne successor made by a solo dev is coming to PC soon and looks almost as good as the games it was based on.

The Max Payne franchise revolutionised third-person shooters with its impressive bullet-time mechanic, making every action sequence feel intense and cinematic.

Considering that, it’s no wonder that so many games since have wanted to pay homage to it in some or other.

Even Rockstar Games seemingly recognises the impact it had on the gaming industry; it's rumoured to be one of the remakes currently in development with the studio.

If you want a remake you can play now though, look no further than the RTX Remix version.

Back to games inspired by Payne though, RASS is a single-player title currently being developed by Votal Dev and it looks absolutely flawless.

One Big Robotic Ruckus

Made with Unreal Engine 5, the game is set during an alternate history Egypt where the British have colonised the country. The difference is automatons have been invented and are seemingly acting as soldiers to aid the occupation.

You play as RASS, the robotic protector of your city tasked with defending it from invaders through any means necessary, especially lethal force.

Making a game for Max Payne fans who are tired of waiting

Like the games that inspired it, RASS uses an array of movement mechanics to make each shootout more engaging.

With diving, sliding and slowing down time itself, your character becomes a one-bot army in a fight for survival.

Gameplay footage shows RASS fighting their way through what appears to be some sort of office space, switching between pistols and a shotgun to fend off attacking robots.

By diving off balconies and sliding past tables, RASS puts these cybernetic assailants down at awesome pace, and watching the chaos unfold takes us back to the first time we ever saw a bullet-time mechanic in a video game.

The whole thing is magic and we can’t wait to play it for ourselves.

At the time of writing though, there’s no planned launch date for the game. There isn’t even a Steam page yet where you can wishlist it for later.

For updates on its development, you can always follow Votal Dev on X, though we’ll also be keeping an eye out for demo at some point down the line provided the project continues to advance.

Max Payne truly was something special, and it’s amazing to see its impact still being felt today.
