Halo Combat Evolved new gameplay mode is blowing PC fans away

Want to play Halo like never before?

Halo: Combat Evolved has aged beautifully over the years, and now it’s even better thanks to a new mode PC users can take advantage of.

There have been some incredible first-person shooters over the years but very few have changed the genre for the better, and up there with the greats are Doom and Halo: Combat Evolved. These are two games that really pushed the boundaries for what a first-person shooter could be, and we should be eternally grateful for them.

You can play Halo: Combat Evolved almost exactly how it launched over 20 years ago via Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

Instead of replaying Halo: Combat Evolved the normal way, or through the “remastered” version, there is a third option that PC players are already having a lot of fun with, VR.

That’s right a VR version of the first Halo game is now available to the masses and it’s ludicrously fun.

It plays like any other first-person VR game and sees the player have to manually reload their guns, smack enemies around, and you can even one-hand weapons which makes wielding the chunky Halo: CE magnum all the more satisfying.

You can find the mod online but it’s important to note it does not work with the Halo: The Master Chief Collection version of the game, you’ll need an original copy to get it up and running.

Halo Studios has been quite open to accepting player made modes into its games though, and it's even collaborated with a few like the Halo 2 E3 2004 demo level which is now officially available to play in Halo: MCC.

If Halo: Combat Evolved VR takes off, there’s a minor chance it’ll be implemented through the Steam workshop if it can be tweaked to work with the up-to-date version of the game.

It’s a truly impressive project, and it’d be great to see more like it in the future that allow us to play through Halo 2, Halo 3 and even Halo 3: ODST in a VR format.
