Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry studio Ubisoft has just launched a new IP to a surprising lack of fanfare.
Certainly, Ubisoft has lost the trust of its fans in recent years, but new release Morbid Metal looks to be a total banger.
To be specific, Ubisoft is only handling publishing duties on this one with development done by indie team Screen Juice.
Morbid Metal is a slick new action RPG with roguelite elements that blends the difficulty of Dark Souls, the combat styling of Ghost of Yotei, with the formula of Returnal.

“Explore the remains of a distant dystopian future and survive in a gritty and brutal world of high‑octane, fast‑paced hack‑and‑slash action,” reads the synopsis.
“Each cycle reveals fragments of forgotten truth about mankind’s self‑inflicted downfall.”
Players can uniquely shapeshift between multiple builds including Flux, Ekku, and Vekta - with each iteration of the character boasting unique attacks and abilities.
As you’ve perhaps guessed, players will wipe out enemies in an experience that grows more difficult the further you progress, culminating in a big ol’ boss fight.
In those boss encounters, “timing, adaptability, and composure are critical to survival”, devs have warned.
Given the roguelite elements of Morbid Metal, every run is unique so there’s great replayability.

You can also risk it with ‘Devil’s Bargains’ which may give you a boost, or there are ‘Operator’s Trials’ which yield great rewards.
Morbid Metal’s story surrounds the player character being the last AI created by a mysterious operator and guided by Eden.
Why do you find yourself trapped within this world? How do you escape? Those are questions the game will seek to answer.
For now, the game is only available on PC storefront Steam where it’s launched in early access.
You can pick it up for £11.99 with that introductory offer running until 21 April. The price will then increase to £15.99 which is still very reasonable in today’s video games market.
Already, it's faring pretty well with players with an early score of 78%.
“As others wrote, the game is basically DMC + Returnal. Combat is very satisfying and relies on switching between three characters: fast robot boi, thicc robot papi with axe and third robot one that I have not unlocked. Game is also pretty challenging for my old non-zoomer brain,” wrote one player. Wonderful descriptions.

I have a feeling that it’ll be very exciting to see Morbid Metal grow as it takes on player feedback throughout its early access period.
