Cyberpunk 2077 parent company praised for major new announcement

This is exactly what the industry needs

CD Projekt isn’t simply the company behind several of your favourite games, by which I mean the likes of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077.

The company is also the brains behind online storefront GOG.

And while you likely best know GOG for its cheap PC deals and occasional free game giveaways, the platform has launched a new initiative that’s garnered praise from across the industry.

With the industry becoming more and more reliant on both digital and online releases, there are - as I’m sure you’re aware - major concerns over preservation.

Well, GOG is doing something about that, launching the GOG Preservation Program.

The initiative essentially seeks to ensure that ‘classic’ games remain compatible with both modern and future systems.

If they’re not, GOG’s team is applying modification improvements to ensure that’s the case.

When a game passes GOG’s various tests, a ‘Good Old Game’ seal of approval is applied which allows users to view what was improved for each individual title in order to maintain compatibility.

Fallout: New Vegas is one of those included games.

“Time is erasing the games that shaped you,” the website reads. “Forgotten, incompatible, unplayable. We can fight back.”

“The GOG Preservation Program ensures classic games remain playable on modern systems, even after their developers stopped supporting them. By maintaining these iconic titles, GOG helps you protect and relive the memories that shaped you, DRM-free and with dedicated tech support,” it continues.

Among the games supported so far are Resident Evil Bundle, The Witcher: Enhanced Edition, System Shock 2, Fallout, and Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition.

In fact, there are 100 games in the preservation programme so far, with 501 improvements made.

More games will eventually be added.

There’s only one downside, and that’s that support applies to Windows only at the moment, so Mac and Linux users won’t be able to appreciate the team’s work.

Even still, when preservation is such a major concern, it’s incredible to see a company as big as CD Projekt RED taking a stand and doing something about it.

I just need someone to restore my beloved Theme Park World and I’ll be a happy bunny.
