Steam Next Fest has brought a new free demo unto us, and it’s one definitely worth checking out for the horror fans.

Beneath, the upcoming horror game from Camel 101, looks like it combines the atmospheric dread of Bloodborne with the shooting mechanics of Call of Duty: Zombies.

It’s a Lovecraft-inspired FPS where you must survive against enemies with limited ammo and scarce supplies. It’s a true survival horror game in that regard.

The Steam page for Beneath describes a little more about what to expect from the plot and gameplay: “Seasoned diver Noah Quinn’s routine expedition plunges him into chaos, trapping him in the depths of the ocean, where an ancient evil lurks. As supplies dwindle and nightmarish creatures close in, Noah must confront horrifying mutations and unravel a sinister conspiracy that threatens humanity itself."

It continues, “With his daughter’s life hanging in the balance, Noah is pushed to his limits in a desperate race against time. Can he uncover the truth and stop an ancient horror from surfacing, or will the abyss consume them all? Created by two passionate brothers, Beneath fuses Lovecraftian horror with an action movie narrative set deep in the arctic ocean. You will race against time to find a cure for your daughter, fighting for survival as you travel between a series of research stations and discover the dark intentions of the Omnium Corporation.”

In case you’re interested in checking Beneath out, there is now a PC demo available as part of Steam Next Fest. So far, it seems to be going over pretty well, as the reviews are currently 70% positive.

“Having a blast. old-school, unforgiving but fun. Loads of improvements since the playtest. Feels like a hidden gem,” reads one positive review.

“Love the old school feel of this demo,” reads another review. “Takes me back to the 360 era of shooters.”

Despite some of the positive buzz, there have also been a few negative reviews surrounding the game as well, with some citing performance issues and creative choices as reasons the demo should have been held back. As one negative review puts it, the demo is “way too early in development for people to be playing it. Inputs only sometimes work. The motion blur is sickening and the first person animations are clipping out of frame. It's also more ‘SCP’ than ‘Lovecraftian’”.

Beneath’s demo is available as part of Steam Next Fest, and will be playable until 20 October.
