Nintendo has announced that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will have a multiplayer component, sort of.

The Switch 2 Direct was last week, and during it, Nintendo announced certain games from the original Switch would be receiving next-gen upgrades.

These upgrades include increased framerates and 4K resolutions. There will also be certain new features that Switch 2 users can take advantage of that weren't possible on the original console.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is releasing worldwide later this spring.

Of course, these features are only available to you if you pay a $10 upgrade fee. The Switch 2 can still play the original games via backwards compatibility, but you won't get the enhanced benefits without paying for the upgrade.

With new features like GameChat and GameShare enhancing the social aspect of the Switch 2, it also looks like some games will be having new multiplayer components where there previously were none.

The Switch 2 edition of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will let you download an app called Zelda Notes. It functions as a second-screen app where you can manage your inventory and items on the go.

The app also has a bank function, where you can place items from your inventory and withdraw them at a later time. You can also use this to gift items to people on your friend list.

To use this feature you basically need to generate a QR code, which your friend can then scan and access the associated item to download in their game. Some items can even be traded between Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild.

These features won't be coming to the Switch 1 versions of the game, so if you're excited to use the new Zelda Notes app, make sure you've paid the $10 upgrade fee to play the game natively on a Switch 2.

The Nintendo Switch 2 will launch worldwide on 5 June, 2025 along with the Switch 2 enhanced versions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
